Woman's Suffrage: Marietta Stow Signed Cabinet Card. 4.25" x 6.5" with a Morse, San Francisco studio mark. Marietta Stow was an early champion of equal rights for women. She pushed the conventional boundaries by running for governor of California and also running for Vice President of the United States as the Equal Rights Party candidate in the 1884 election. It was in this last capacity that she signed, actually double signed this cabinet card. Directly under her portrait she has written "Marietta L. Stow,/ 1884 Equal Rights Candidate/ for Vice President of the/ United States." In red ink, and presumably in her hand is written "Residence - 1921 Sacramento St. San Francisco Cal." and the date "May 1, 1885". On the verso she's written "Complements of/ Marietta L. Stow./ San Francisco, Cal./ May 1-85". A fantastic image from one of the lesser known but important leaders in the fight for equal rights for women. Some light toning to image and with mounting remnants on the verso, else in excellent condition.
