    Description

Winfield Scott Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", "Steamboat, near Cincinnati, Head Qrs. E. Division", November 30, 1838. General Scott writes to Brigadier General Hugh Brady, commander of the military garrison in Detroit, concerning preparations to resolve the worsening crisis between Great Britain and the United States over the U.S.-Canadian border.

In the fall of 1838, General Winfield Scott was on his way from Tennessee, where he had been relocating the Cherokees, to the Canadian border where he had been assigned by President Van Buren to settle the Canadian boundary dispute. By the time Scott wrote this letter in November, he was travelling on an Ohio River steamboat "near Cincinnati . . . approaching the Canada frontiers." According to the opening paragraph of the letter, he was hoping to "personally confer with the governors of Pennsylvania & N. York," likely to arrange for the mustering of volunteers if the situation deteriorated into conflict. But the "object of this note" to General Brady was to gather information: "to request a report from you of the state of the frontier under your immediate observation. Please give the posts occupied by your troops & a report of all recent & apprehended events which may be interesting to the service." The crisis never became a war, but Great Britain and the U.S. did raise troops in preparation. General Scott eventually presented a compromise which settled the dispute in an 1842 treaty. Some minor discolorations to the paper, as well as folds and a small tear on the address page.
