William Walker Note of Indebtedness Signed as President of the Republic of Lower California. One partly printed page, p" x 5.75"; January 18, 1854. A note of indebtedness in the amount of $144 dollars issued to Francis M. Playfoot for thirty-six days of military service. Certificate number 30, and reading: REPUBLIC OF LOWER CALIFORNIA at top. Walker signs as president of the Republic, and the certificate is countersigned by his Secretary of War.Walker had a varied and colorful career that included work as a journalist, attorney, and physician. But he is most notorious for his adventures as a soldier of fortune and filibusterer. Simply defined, filibusterers were Anglo-American soldiers of fortune who attempted to carve out states populated by white English speakers in Latin America. In November 1853, Walker attempted such a plot in Mexico in Baja California and Sonora in 1853, but met with stiff Mexican resistance. The Republic lasted approximately three months, and the certificate offered here is dated just three days before its disestablishment on January 21, 1854. This is the first certificate of this type we have seen.
Condition: Heavy wear, with soiling, uneven toning and foxing. Repairs to separations at folds are evident on verso. Walker signature remains bold.
