    Rescued by New Jersey Troops

William Tecumseh Sherman: Autograph Letter Signed with Outstanding Content. 3-page ALS, Washington, D.C., May 15, 1874, "Headquarters Army of the United States" letterhead, written on three sides of 5" x 8" bifolium lined stationery, the integral leaf with signature separate and mounted to a thin board. Sherman writes to George W. Mindil, Colonel of the 33rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, who received the Medal of Honor for his 1862 charge against Confederate artillery positions. In part: "I recall the New Jersey regiment that went with me to Meridian which stood by the wagon train at Decatur Miss. so well against an attack of Armstrong's Division of Cavalry and in my opinion saved me personally, for I was actually surrounded by cavalry... I would have fallen ingloriously a prisoner in the Land of the Rivers... I was almost alone in a log house... till relieved by another Regiment sent back for their Colonel that had marched down the Road." Clean and bright example with great content.
