    Description

William T. Sherman Inscription and Signature on a James McPherson Cabinet Card. 4.25" x 6.5", n.p.; October 20, 1876. On the back of the cabinet card is written by Sherman, "This is a Copy of the Likeness of Genl. J.B. McPherson presented to the society of the Army of the Tennessee. Oct 18, 76 by Genl. Radock of Washington DC. W.T. Sherman, General. Presdt. Society Oct 20, 1876".

General James McPherson took command of the Army of the Tennessee after Sherman was promoted to take charge of all of the western armies, in March 1864. He had meant to return home to marry his fiancée, but his leave of absence was revoked by Sherman, who needed him in his upcoming Atlanta Campaign. Tragically, McPherson was killed on July 22, 1864, at the Battle of Atlanta; he was the second highest ranking officer in the Union to be killed in action. Sherman was deeply affected by the death of McPherson and personally wrote a note of sympathy to McPherson's fiancée.

Condition: Bold signature. The image of McPherson is slightly faded, with foxing throughout and a small line of soiling. Written in pencil underneath McPherson is "Gen Sherman's Endorsement". On verso, above Sherman's endorsement is written in an unknown hand "Presented to W. Bowen Moore with following autograph endorsement by General of Armies".
