    Description

William T. Sherman Autograph Note Signed "Sherman" with additional telegram to Sherman. One page, 7.75" x 3.75", n. p. [Headquarters 2nd Brigade 1st Division], June 14, 1863, while laying siege to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Writing in reply to a telegram that he has received, Sherman pens a quick note to Captain Jacob P. Sampson, a member of the Signal Corps, which reads, in full: "Thank you for the Message. The boats must be after the Mortar Boats. If [illegible due to a small stain] do not answer that message, please let me know." On the verso, he has written "Cp Sampson/Signal Corps." One spot of staining that obscures a bit of the text. Else fine.

Sherman is here writing in response to a telegram received by him that morning from Colonel Charles R. Woods via Capt. Sampson reading: "A fleet of Rebel boats have just passed up the river either towards the Gunboat Cin. or the Mortarboats." Sherman commanded one of the three corps during the siege of Vicksburg (May 18-July 4, 1863).
