    Description

William Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificates (5) Signed "Wm Rockefeller Vice" as Vice President. Five partially printed pages, all measuring approximately 16" x 7.75", New York. All are engraved in black and brown ink, the intricate borders and corner decorations of this handsome issue are offset by a large vignette of the Washington Capitol building at upper center. Includes the following:

Certificate No. A303, May 29, 1883. With original receipt attached, issuing 100 shares to A.F. Bostwick. Countersigned by Henry M. Flagler as secretary and J. A. Bostwick as Treasurer. The stock certificate was cancelled on May 9, 1899. The verso records that the shares were "Reissued to the same person".

Certificate No. A305, June 6, 1883. With original receipt attached, issuing 100 shares to Wake Forrest College. Countersigned by Jno. D. Archibald as assistant secretary and J. A. Bostwick as Treasurer. The stock certificate was cancelled on July 24, 1899. The verso records the transfer of these shares to H.M. Flagler. The Bostwick Residence Hall on Wake Forest campus is named after the Standard Oil Trust treasurer, due to his role as the school's early benefactor. These 100 shares were gifted to the school, along with $1.5 million dollars that was left to Wake Forest in Bostwick's will. These generous contributions to the school resulted in Wake Forest becoming a private institution.

Condition: Flattened folds, light toning at edges, with small holes and some paper loss along the left margins of the receipts from when each was removed from binding. Small cancellation stamps at the upper margins. All of the signatures have cut cancellations. Certificate No. A303 has a slightly unevenly right vertical margin. Overall good.
