William P. Zuber Card Signed "W. P. Zuber." One page, 3.25" x 2", n. d., n. p. He has identified himself under his signature by writing "San Jacinto Soldier." On the verso, he has written "Compliment to Mr. W. M. Shaw." Fine.

William Physick Zuber (1820-1913), a native of Georgia, came to Texas with his parents in 1830. At the tender age of fifteen, Zuber enlisted in the Fourth Company, Second Regiment, Texas Volunteers during the Texas Revolution. While he was present at the Battle of San Jacinto (he was part of the rear guard stationed on the north bank of Buffalo Bayou tasked with guarding the army's baggage) he was not involved in combat. Zuber continued his military career in Texas following the Revolution, fighting Indians on the frontier and serving in the Somervell expedition which followed General Adrián Woll's invasion of Texas in 1842. In 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served in the Twenty-first Texas Cavalry in Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana. He was a charter member of the Texas State Historical Association (he was given an honorary life membership due to his service in the Revolution) and contributed no less than eight articles to the Quarterly of the TSHA. At the time of his death, he was the last surviving member of the Army of San Jacinto.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
