Description

William McKinley Manuscript Letter Signed "William McKinley" as President, one page, 5.25" x 9". Executive Mansion, Washington, October 3, 1898. To Col. Chas. Spring, Brigham, Mass. In full, "Thank you for the lobster-claws which lie on my desk and which you sent me for cigar-holders. With kind wishes for your health." Col. Spring must have been a personal friend. President McKinley never smoked in public nor permitted himself to be photographed with a cigar, but, according to usher Ike Hoover who worked in the White House from 1891-1933, "McKinley had a passion for cigars and was perhaps the most intense smoker of all the presidents during my life. One never saw him without a cigar in his mouth except at meals or when asleep." Lightly soiled and stained but with a large 4" full signature of McKinley.
