William McKinley Autograph Letter Signed on Ida McKinley's personal Executive Mansion letterhead imprinted with her initials. 2 pages of a bifolium, folded down to 5.4" x 6.75", undated but likely circa 1899. A letter written on behalf of Ida to their niece Kittie Endsley, sending congratulations on her impending marriage. In part: "Mrs. McKinley asks me to acknowledge the receipt of your recent letter announcing your coming marriage... She says she is not able to get out & look up a wedding gift... so she sends you a check to use in your own way..." McKinley signs, "Yours truly, William McKinley." Ida remained very fragile after the death of their two daughters in infancy. No doubt, she was in poor health at the time this letter was written, as McKinley is writing on her behalf. Although president for five years, handwritten letters by McKinley as President are uncommon. This letter is particularly desirable as it exemplifies the undying devotion he had for his wife; in this instance by his serving as her amanuensis. Small separation at the horizontal fold, and light soiling, otherwise in excellent condition.
