William J. Duane 1811 Autograph Letter Signed from an early American journalist and author with incredible content. Four pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Philadelphia, March 4, 1811. Duane was the publisher of the Philadelphia Aurora, the leading organ of the Democratic Party. His friend Thomas Jefferson went so far as to attribute his election as President to the support of Duane's paper. This present letter comments on various political situations in Washington and the dissolution of the Bank of the United States, in part: "...Mr. Madison's house is a scene of odious intrigue. Washington is a scene of dissipation and extravagance which those which also have seen the courts of Europe say they do not equal...Mr. Madison is like a man with his head in a noose, and these parties holding each of them an end of the rope -- he must select or perish between them...How Mr. Hamilton fares, I know not; before he was a member of the Executive I had been for years in constant correspondence with him. I believe him a very upright man and that he has been sickened to the soul to see what he has seen..." Fine condition; hinged below a small vintage portrait. Originally purchased from Walter Benjamin Autographs. Also included in this lot is a Document Signed by Secretary of War John Armstrong Jr. One page, partly printed, 8" x 9.75", Washington, March 18, 1814, commissioning John E. Calhoun as captain in the Third Regiment of Riflemen with an officer's endorsement on the verso. Armstrong was a delegate to the Continental Congress as well as a senator from New York. He fought in the Revolutionary War and again in the War of 1812 before Madison named him Secretary of War. He was forced to resign in September of 1814 when the he was blamed for the British burning of Washington. Also fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
