DescriptionWilliam H. Taft Typed Letter Signed. Two pages on War Department imprinted letterhead, 8" x 10.5"; December 31, 1904. A letter to lifelong friend and fellow Yale alumni Howard C. Hollister sending belated holiday greetings and referencing the Panama Canal, construction of which Taft was tasked with overseeing. In part: "The truth is that I am overwhelmed with work, and am trying to get ready for the coming of Congress into session again. Philippine matters and Canal matters and routine matters of the department, together with the social functions that I must attend leave me no time for thought... I wish I could write you a longer letter... but after having spent an hour in listening to a lecture on the necessity for changing the route of the Panama Canal from where it is now to another point on the Isthmus thirty or forty miles away, by a crank introduced to me by Major Lloyd, I have not time..." Signed, "Bill." Together with a two-page retained carbon of a December 21, 1904 letter from Hollister to Taft about a possible appointment to the Attorney Generalship of Puerto Rico; a typed letter signed from Henry Hoyt dated December 8, 1905 and a handwritten letter from Hoyt dated December 23, 1904 both addressed to Hollister. All three transmitted letters are accompanied by their original cover. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
Condition: All letters have flattened mail folds and are in near fine condition. All envelopes have light soiling, and Taft's signature has faded a bit and is smudged.
Howard C. Hollister graduated from Yale in 1878, the same year as William H. Taft. Taft would later appoint Hollister to a new seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
