Description

William H. Taft Typed Letter Signed as President and Printed Invitation from Mrs. Taft. One page, 7" x 9", Washington, August, 1909, on White House letterhead to Senator Reed Smoot of Utah. In part: "This will introduce to you Mr. Lawrence Abbott, of the Outlook, who is anxious to discuss the details with you of the cotton schedule, with a view to commenting on it in his magazine." Usual mail folds with light soiling to perimeter, else good. The printed embossed invitation is 4.25" x 3.5", Presidential Seal at the top from Mrs. Taft for "Wednesday afternoon March 24th at five o'clock." The envelope is addressed to "Mrs. Smoot, The Raleigh." Invitation is very good.

    More Information:

Reed Smoot was Utah's longest serving senator with tenure of thirty years. A devout Mormon, Smoot served as an apostle, and was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. When he was first elected, a bitter 4 year battle ensued to determine whether Smoot would be allowed to serve because of his role as a Mormon apostle. Although the committee recommended that Smoot be removed from office, the Senate overruled the decision and Smoot was allowed to serve his term. After repeated re-elections, Smoot would continue to serve as Utah's Senator for 30 years. He would also continue to serve as an apostle of the LDS, and upon his death, he was third in the line of succession to lead the church.
