    Description

    Taft Supreme Court

William H. Taft Supreme Court Photograph Signed by All Nine Justices, ca. 1921, shortly after President Warren Harding appointed Taft as chief justice. Sepia-toned, 9.75" x 9" (sight), showing four justices standing behind five seated justices, with Taft sitting prominently in the center. The justices, all signing below the image, are William H. Taft, William R. Day, Joseph McKenna, Oliver W. Holmes Jr., Willis Van Devanter, Mahlon Pitney, James C. McReynolds, Louis D. Brandeis, and John H. Clarke.

Taft has the distinction of being the only person to serve both as president and as a Supreme Court chief justice. (His lifelong desire had been to be chief justice, not president.) He served until his death in 1930. This beautiful and rare signed photograph is matted and framed to an overall size of 18" x 17". A deep crease exists in the lower white margin, between the two rows of signatures and well away from the image; signatures are not affected.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
