William H. Harrison Document Signed "Wm H. Harrison adc". One page, 8.25" x 3.5", Fort Washington, Ohio; 1795. A receipt for the "Return of Whiskey for the Barge Crew for 2 days..." signed by Harrison during his commission as aide-de-camp to General Anthony Wayne. With docketing on verso.

William H. Harrison (1773-1841) was made aide-de-camp to General Wayne in 1793. He was present at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, where Wayne won a decisive battle over the Native Americans and brought the Northwest Indian War to a close. Harrison continued his military career through the War of 1812, before seeking public office. He ran for president in 1836 but was beaten by Martin Van Buren. In 1840, he ran again, and despite Democratic attacks on his war record, Harrison won the presidential election by a landslide of 170 electoral votes. He only lived a month after his inauguration, however, and became the first American president to die in office.

Condition: Toning throughout, with scattered foxing. Slightly uneven edges, else good.
