    Description

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody: A Great Letter about His Last Buffalo Hunt. Responding to a question he writes in January 1898: "...will say the last big buffalo hunt that I took part in was North of the Yellowstone River, near Ft. Peck, in Sept. 1876, while General Terry was in pursuit of Sitting Bulls Hostile Indians, who were then making their way to Canada." Cody played an active role in Washington's program of systematic slaughter of the buffalo herds in order to deprive the Plains tribes of the mainstay of nomadic life and force them onto reservations.

Excellent condition with bold ink signature, elegantly custom framed with a Woodbury type cabinet photo. 16.5" x 13" as framed. Most known Cody letters deal with routine family and business matters, making this a special example. From the collection of Donald P. Dow.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
