    Description

William E. "Grumble" Jones Autograph Letter Signed with 6th Virginia Cavalry Content. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Edinburg, Virginia; March 3, 1863. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson from Brigadier General William E. "Grumble" Jones. In this brief letter Jones informs Davidson about the 6th Virginia Cavalry and their position as guards of a bridge near Mt. Crawford. It reads in part: "When the guard was sent to the bridge at Mt. Crawford I had forgotten my...instructions returning your command to Harrisonburg. The 6th Va Cavly has been guarding the bridge all winter and it is the same regiment that now furnishes the guard. The present instructions which you seem to have accurate enough or all practical purposes were not intended to remain in force more than a few days. It is hardly necessary to make any changes in this matter as a few days more must give an outline by next phase to affairs in the Valley." Signed, "W. E. Jones / Brig Genl Comdg." From the Military Archive of CSA General Henry B. Davidson.

Condition: Mounting residue with paper attachment on verso. Toning from residue has bled through along the recto left margin. Two small dampstains that have smudged two words, although legibility is not affected. Smoothed folds.
