    Description

William Clark Autograph Requisition Signed "W. Clark." One page, 8" x 4.5" (width varies), "Greeneville [Ohio]," June 2, 1794. In the summer of 1794, Clark was serving in the Legion of the United States, the last remnant of the Continental Army (comprised of the former 1st and 2nd regiments) under the command of General Anthony Wayne. Clark was given a lieutenancy in the 4th Sub-Legion in 1792 and had taken part in skirmishes during the Northwest Indian War. He was instrumental in forming an alliance with the Chickasaw Indians, which the Legion used as scouts. Here Clark files a requisition, in full: "Sir, Please to deliver for the Chickasaw Ind:s one quart of Whiskey." Two months later, Clark's regiment would see action at the Battle of Fallen Timbers which would put an end to the Northwest Indian War.

Countersigned four times and docketed on the verso. The bottom edge is uneven from the paper having been torn. Light bleed through from the verso. Very small hole in the center near the intersection of the vertical and horizontal fold, but not affecting the text. The text and signatures are extraordinarily clear.

While serving in the Legion, Clark was placed in command of one Meriwether Lewis. The two men developed a strong friendship and, in 1803, when asked to choose a co-captain for his expedition to the northwest, Lewis immediately chose his old friend, William Clark, a move that would assure both men a place in the pantheon of American heroes.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
