    Description

William "Bill" Tilghman Document Signed "Wm Tilghman" as deputy U.S. Marshal. Two partially-printed pages, 8.25" x 14", Oklahoma, January 27, 1909. Lawman Tilghman has signed this U.S. Marshal's return for a circuit court case from the Eastern District of Oklahoma (United States of America v. Claude M. Aman, et al.) stating that he had "served said order on the within named Defendant L. E. Patterson, by delivering a true copy thereof to the said Defendant personally at Oklahoma City, OK." Toned with smoothed folds and a large, clear signature.

William Tilghman (1854-1924) worked as a law enforcer for most of his life. Beginning in 1889, he worked as a deputy U.S. Marshal in Oklahoma Territory, one of the most lawless parts of the U.S. Along with the two other members of the Three Guardsmen, Chris Madsen and Heck Thomas, Tilghman earned a reputation as a fearless lawman, bringing over 300 outlaws to justice and, fourteen years before signing this document, capturing Bill Doolin in Arkansas. Tilghman was the only member of the Guardsmen to die violently. In 1924 while serving as a town marshal at the age of seventy, he was shot on the streets of Cromwell, Oklahoma, by a drunken prohibition agent.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
