    "Ned Buntline's Annoyance"

Wild West Legend and Author Ned Buntline Autograph Letter Signed "E. Z. C. Judson". One page written on the recto and verso, 5.75" x 9", on his personal letterhead, "Headquarters Ned Buntline", Eagles Nest, Stamford, New York, dated April 5, 1881, to the Hon. F. R. Gilbert. The letter concerns retaining Gilbert's services in the matter of a blackmail case and reads in full: "As I have before stated, I desire to retain you in all law cases of mine & if an advance fee is required a check is ready for you at once. I hold a receipt in full for a settlement of the black mail claim that woman [illegible] & will push her to the extremity of [illegible] if she continues to annoy me with her mercenary & fictitious claims. Yours truly E. Z. C. Judson". With the usual fold creases, else fine.

Edward Zane Carroll Judson, better known as Ned Buntline, was a journalist, publisher, publicist, writer of dime novels and general raconteur. He counted among his many friends such western legends as Buffalo Bill Cody and Bat Masterson. Buntline was no stranger to controversy during his career and this letter appears to document one such episode. In the April 16, 1881 edition of The New York Times an article under the heading "Ned Buntline's Annoyances" reads: "Col. E. Z. C. Judson, who is better known to the public by his pen name 'Ned Buntline' writes to The Times in reference to a dispatch from Kingston, printed yesterday, in which it was said a woman calling herself Mrs. Lavanche L. Judson, and claiming to be the legally wedded wife of Col. Judson, had appeared on Tuesday at his residence in Stamford, Delaware County, and presented her claim. Col. Judson, whose note is dated from this City, says he left home on Tuesday at noon to do business in New York, and that then no news of this kind had reached him. An attempt to extort money from him through letters has been made, he adds, and the matter is now in the hands of his legal representatives."
