Werner Heisenberg Autograph Manuscript Signed. One page, 7" x 9", no place; [1955]. A letter discussing his Uncertainty Principle. It reads in part [English translation]: "As a result of fine structure physics the use of concepts such as position and velocity of a particle is limited by relationships..." He then provides his equation and continues, "...thus these equations declare the boundaries within which the fine structure concepts can be applied fully." Signed, "Werner Heisenberg." Composed in German with an English translation. Together with stamped envelope.

Werner Heisenberg Autograph Letter of Transmittal Signed. One page, 7" x 9", St. Andrews University; November 1, 1955. A letter of transmittal introducing his manuscript. Addressed to a Dr. Frank Groom Kirtz. It reads in part: "...I have been on a lecturing tour. I am enclosing a statement about the Uncertainty Principle of the kind you suggested. It is written in German since most of my papers were published in German."

Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) was a German physicist and philosopher. He discovered how to formulate quantum mechanics in terms of matrices. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1932. Heisenberg published his Uncertainty Principle in 1927 which states that the more exact the position of a particle is described, the less accurately its momentum can be projected from initial conditions.
