First and second group of NASA astronauts.

We Seven by the Astronauts Themselves First Printing Signed by Fourteen of the First Sixteen Astronauts and Three NASA Legends. (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1962), 352 pages, black cloth binding with white lettering on the spine and front board, 8vo (6.5" x 9.5"), no dust jacket. Signed on the illustrated front free endpaper by six of the "Mercury Seven" astronauts: ("Gordon Cooper" autopen); "J H Glenn, Jr."; "Scott Carpenter"; "D K Slayton" (1924-1993); "W M Schirra Jr" (1923-2007); "Gus Grissom" (1926-1967); and "Alan Shepard" (1923-1998). The next free endpaper is signed by eight of the "New Nine", the second group of astronauts chosen by NASA: ("James Lovell" autopen); "Edward H. White II" (1930-1967); "Elliot See" (1927-1966); "Neil Armstrong"; "Charles Conrad Jr" (1927-1999); "Thomas P. Stafford"; "Frank Borman", "John Young"; and "James A. McDivitt". Beneath is the signature of "Shorty Powers" (1922-1979), the famous NASA Public Affairs Officer during the Mercury years, often known as the "Voice of the Astronauts." The next page contains the signatures of: "Walter C. Williams" (1919-1995), Flight Operations Director for some of the early Mercury flights; and "Robert R Gilruth" (1913-2000), Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center from Mercury through most of the Apollo flights. An amazing assemblage of signatures. The book is in very good condition with light wear and light foxing and original owner address labels on the illustrated endpapers which affect no signatures.
