W.B. "Bat" Masterson: A Great 1880 Subpoena Signed by Him as Sheriff of Dodge City. Some thirty words and numbers in his hand, boldly signed "W.B. Masterson Sheriff." One of the most desirable autographic items for Masterson, as it relates to the era and association which brought him such great fame.

Items signed by this iconic Western legend are surprisingly rare, with possibly fewer than 100 assorted examples in collector's hands. Like Wyatt Earp, who died in 1929 after a career in Hollywood working with the film industry, Masterson lived a long life. When he died in 1921, he had been a prominent sports journalist for over a decade. One would think that in these circumstances men like Earp and Masterson would have signed reams of documents and correspondence, as well as accommodating a steady flow of autograph seekers. Yet signatures of both these Western giants remain elusive and expensive. A very comparable subpoena signed by Masterson drew heavy bidding in our June 2012 Western Legends auction, selling for what may be a record price for the type - $26,290.

Excellent condition, measuring 10.375" x 8" when folded open.
