Washington Irving Autograph Manuscript. One page, 6.5" x 4", n.p., n.d. The early American author writes in ink in full: "Thus says Vasconcelos, this great question, the greatest ever agitated between the two crowns, for it was the partition of a new world, was amicably settled by the prudence and address of two of the most polite monarchs that ever swayed the sceptre. It was arranged to the satisfaction of both parties . . . without any regard to the rights of the native inhabitant." Irving also wrote in the top left corner "507" and in the top right corner "12."

This fragment is the final paragraph of Book V of Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus. Irving wrote the book while in Europe in 1826 and 1827, publishing it in January 1828. Toned paper with tape repairs on the verso along one fold. Penciled notations in the left margin. Another piece of blank paper of equal size, likely from the same larger page, is also included.
