Description

War of 1812 Autograph Collection. Often called our Second War of Independence, the importance of the War of 1812 is sometimes overlooked. Though ending in a stalemate, it once and for all confirmed America's independence from Britain as well as Canada's right to exist as a British colony in North America. This amazing group of more than 100 signed items would form the basis for, or be a welcome addition to, a fine collection of this period's military and political figures. A few of the pieces included are described below:

William Bainbridge, U.S. Navy Commodore famous for his victory over HMS Java. ALS with vintage steel engraving.

    J. Newman, Commander of Fort Pike in Louisiana. February 1, 1815 LS to British officer in the Rigolets, in part: "Your having passed the limits prescribed for Flags of truce, this morning placed me under the disagreeable necessity of opening my batteries on your boat carrying a Flag of truce..."

Isaac Hull, U.S. Navy Commodore, commander of the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"). LS mentioning that very ship.

James Van Cleve, ALS to historian Benson Lossing with a hand-drawn pencil sketch of the Battle of French Creek.

David Porter, U.S. Navy officer, commander of the USS Essex. ALS and DS (twice).

Alexander Macomb Jr., General and hero at the Battle of Plattsburg. Long ALS.

Defense of Philadelphia. Important DS dated November 18, 1814, in part: "...Resolved, That this committee accept the offer of the Secretary of the navy... and will advance such sum of money not exceeding one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, as may be necessary for the purpose of constructing a steam floating battery to be employed in the defense of the shores of the Delaware and the City of Philadelphia..."

A fabulous collection that took years to assemble. Generally very good to fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
