    Description

War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed of Revolutionary Mordecai General Gist to Nathanael Greene Fine ALS, as brigadier general, two pages, recto and verso, 7.25" x 10", Butter Milk Falls, August 2, 1779. To Major General Nathanael Greene. Anytime two men ride a horse, one must ride behind, and hence much of military life, even in war, concerns precedence. Here Gist writes to Greene on a crucial point. "The present arrangement of our Army points out the command of each Respective Officer of the line; and altho your Rank and Claim to Command, is Indisputable; yet I conceive that you cannot upon Just Military principles, exercise such claims in Action, without a previous appointment from the Commander in Chief, exclusive of which, attaching your self to any Division or Corps, and Commanding in Action, will carry an Implication of demerit and Incapacity in the Officer your supercede." With full typed transcription. In fine condition. Scarce. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
