Description

Walt Whitman Autograph Document Signed. One postcard, 5" x 3", Camden [New Jersey], February 25, 1881. The poet has written in very bold ink: "Received Ten Dollars from J L & J B Gilder for piece in Critic Feb. 12. [Signed] Walt Whitman." Whitman has addressed the postmarked postcard on the verso to "J L Gilder / Critics Office 757 Broadway / New York City." After suffering a stroke in 1873, Whitman moved to Camden, New Jersey, where he continued to write. In 1881, The Critic, a magazine founded in London, published Whitman's Specimen Days, likely the reason for this $10. Some of Whitman's heavy ink has smeared.

The postcard is tipped onto the front free endpaper of Whitman's Leaves of Grass (Boston: Small, Maynard & Company, 1907; green cloth binding). Various newspaper articles about Whitman are tipped into other endpapers in the book. Deckle edged. Moderately worn; binding still tight.
