    Description

Virginia Woolf Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages (front and back), 7.75" x 10", Richmond, Surrey, January 11, 1923. Addressed to Paul Colin, written in purple ink on Hogarth House letterhead. Responding to Colin's request to publish translations of Woolf's works in his French literary publication, Europe. In part:

"...I understand from your letter that you would like to translate & publish some extracts from Monday or Tuesday & my novel Jacob's Room. It will give me great pleasure to agree to this on the terms you mention, on the understanding of course that the translation is carefully made. I have already received a suggestion that Jacob's Room should be translated, and should appear in France in book form. I have not yet made any arrangements about this, but should be glad to know whether you can tell me when you would be able to publish it, & also whether you would wish to issue it afterwards as a book.

It will give me great pleasure to send you copies of of
[sic] my novels, The Voyage Out, Night and Day, & Jacob's Room, & I should be much obliged if you would enter my name as a subscriber to Europe, & would inform me of the amount of the subscription."

Signed, "Virginia Woolf" and accompanied by the original envelope addressed in her hand.

Jacob's Room had been released three months earlier, and was more experimental than her previous novels, and seemed to expand on the innovative writing style displayed in her earlier short story collection, Monday or Tuesday. Colin successfully published excerpts (as requested) of Woolf's novel and short stories in the March 15, 1923 issue of Europe.

Condition: Usual mail folds, light ink transfer on verso, else very good.
