Varina Davis Autograph Letter Signed with its original envelope. Also included is a Jefferson Davis Card Signed and a Jefferson Davis Autograph Manuscript. All items from the former first couple of the Confederacy are dated post-Civil War.

The Varina Davis Autograph Letter Signed (three pages, 4.5" x 7 ", "Beauvoir House", [postmarked May 6, 1887]) is written to Mrs. L. W. Norwood of New Orleans. Mrs. Davis writes of her upcoming trip with her husband, Jefferson Davis, to their Brierfield Plantation near Vicksburg, Mississippi. In part, "We go up to the plantation thirty six miles below Vicksburg tomorrow for a two week visit, and woe is me, I dread the heat, the worry and complaints of the negro tenants, the swamp miasma [unhealthy air] and seven miles drive in the mud before we get there - so where our treasure there is not my heart also." Brierfield had been the Davis' home prior to the Civil War, but the couple moved to Beauvoir, near Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1879. The couple wrote three books while living at Beauvoir: Jefferson wrote The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government (1881) and A Short History of the Confederate States of America (1889), and Varina wrote Jefferson Davis: A Memoir (1890). Following Jefferson's death in 1889, Varina moved out of the South to New York City. This letter is toned with folds. The letter's transmittal envelope, postmarked from Beauvoir, May 6, 1887, is included. The back of the envelope has been detached from the front.

The Jefferson Davis Card Signed measures 3.5" x 2", n.p., n.d., and reads, "Jefferson Davis/ Missi." Mounting residue on verso.

The Jefferson Davis Autograph Manuscript is two pages (5.25" x 7.5", n.p., n.d.). Davis writes to "silence the reproaches of the victorious" by arguing against those who "keep up sectional hate as the means of gaining political power" in post-Civil War America.
