Union Soldier's Letter by Daniel Davis of the 46th Pennsylvania with Battle of Cedar Mountain Content. Three pages of a bifolium, 5" x 7.75", Culpeper Court House; August 17, 1862. Private Davis wrote this letter to his brother soon after the Battle of Cedar Mountain, which reads in part:

"We have been pretty busy during the last week attending to our wounded men. Most of the wounded had gone to Alexandria, but John Richards, Robert Williams, John Blair, Phillip Hall & Hugh Lyons were here until Friday night when they were sent on by the cars to Alexandria. Joseph Matchett went with them to attend them while on the cars, and to see that they were properly cared for. He returned to camp this morning. The captain and William Thompson are the only ones left here. Their wounds are too sore to allow them to travel. The captain had his leg taken off below the knee & Thompson had his arm taken off above the elbow...I see that Lieut Wilsons name is not among the list of officers captured by the Rebels. I believe he is wounded and has been left at some of their hospital. He cannot have been badly wounded or else they would have left him behind...Burnside's troops have been coming on during the past week. Pope has a very large Army with him, and I think he will give them something to do."

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with tiny separations at folds in the margins. Light toning throughout. A small strip of tape is adhered at the top margin where a small tear has been reinforced.
