Union Major General Henry Warner Slocum War-Date Autograph Letter Signed and Post-War Cabinet Card Photograph. Includes: (1) Two page (integral second leaf) ALS on Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, 8" x 10", Washington, October 1, 1861, to the Honorable Thurlow Weed, Albany, New York. A fantastic letter in which General Slocum presents Captain Charles Peebles Kingsbury for appointment to office of Inspector General of the Army. He writes, in part: "The name of Capt. C. P. Kinsgbury of the Ordnance Dept. has been presented to the President as a suitable person to be appointed to the office of Inspector Gen. of the Army...if I am correctly informed his appointment will be urged by Gen. McClellan...He is a native of our state where his has many friends. His appointment will give entire satisfaction to the Army & will be regarded by me as a personal favor. I know that a letter from you on his behalf to the President of Sec. Seward will be of great assistance to him...". Slocum concludes: "I am Sir / very respectfully, / your obt. Serv. / H. M. Slocum". The officer in question, Charles Kingsbury, was earlier instrumental in destroying Harper's Ferry Arsenal when Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861. The paper is toned and bears old, smoothed fold creases and tape repairs on the verso, else a letter with excellent content and in very good condition. (2) Later cabinet card image of General Slocum Charles Rawson, Brooklyn studio mark on the verso and along the lower edge of the recto. Very good.
