    Description

Union General William Tecumseh Sherman Letter Signed "W. T. Sherman". One page on integral second leaf, 8" x 10", New York, February 17, 1888, to F. N. Barrett, editor of the American Grocer. Sherman thanks Barrett for his "flattering criticism" of an article he wrote for Century Magazine. He writes, in part: "The impressions you formed relative to the battle of Franklin are not in the main correct. General J. D. Cox commanded the 23d Corps, General Stanley the 4th Corps, and General Schofield the whole. It is therefore unsafe to say who did the chief fighting when all did so well." The paper is toned and the letter old, smoothed fold creases, else it is quite legible, bright and in very good condition.
