    Description

Union General Emory Upton West Point Diploma. One partially-printed page, 15.75" x 21" (sight), West Point [New York], May 6, 1861, certifying that "Cadet Emory Upton of the State of New York . . . has been judged worthy to receive the Degree required by Law preparatory to his advancement in the U. S. Army" and had been recommended to "the President for Promotion in Engineers, Topographical Engineers, Ordnance, Artillery, Infantry, Dragoons, Mounted Rifleman, or Cavalry." Signed by Alexander Hamilton Bowman as superintendent and countersigned by ten professors, one of whom is future Union General John F. Reynolds, who was killed on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg. Spots of light foxing near the lower edge. Double matted to an overall size of 23" x 27.75".

Upon graduation, Upton (1839-1881) was commissioned a lieutenant in the Union Army, where he would serve in all three branches (infantry, cavalry, and artillery) and fight in many of the major battles of the war, being wounded several times and rising to the rank of brevet major general. During the war, he devised a new tactic of assault which was successfully implemented at Spotsylvania Court House. Suffering from intense headaches after the war, possibly from a tumor in the brain, Upton committed suicide.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
