    The first Chinese ambassadors to the United States

    Ulysses S. Grant Signature on a Table Card for an Event Welcoming China's First Envoys to the United States. Two table cards each measuring 7.25" x 5.5", circa 1868. The first card has Grant's signature at the center (adding his rank), and then proceeding clockwise from the top: Robert Schenck, Representative from Ohio; Schuyler Colfax, Representative from Indiana; Benjamin F. Wade, Senator from Ohio; Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War; James Patterson, Senator from New Hampshire; Daniel Sickles, Brevet Major General, U.S. Army; Charles Sumner, Senator from Massachusetts; Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy; and Roscoe Conkling, Senator from New York.

    The second card is signed by Joseph Barnes at the center, and then proceeding clockwise from the top: Chi-ku-an, Chinese Minister; John Conness, Senator from California; Edwin D. Morgan, Senator from New York; George D. Ramsay, Brevet Major General, U.S. Army; Anson Burlingame, Envoy Extraordinaire and Minister Plenipotentiary form the Chinese Government; Sun Chia-sheng, Senior Chinese Official; Feng Kui-jiu, Senior Chinese Official; Oliver P. Morton, Senator from Indiana; Charles H. Crane, Assistant Surgeon General, Army; and Simon Cameron, Senator from Pennsylvania.

    The cards are accompanied by a small calling card (3.5" x 1.75") of Mr. L. Austin Van Zandt, on which is written, "Autographs of Gen't Grant, members f te Cabinet & the First Chinese Embassadors to the United States."

    Condition: All three cards have age toning, and light soiling. The table cards containing the signatures have a strip of adhesive staining across the top. Accompanied by later printings of photos of the Chinese delegation and an English translation of the Diary of a Chinese Diplomat by Zhang Deyi, one of the youngest members of the delegation who acted as a translator.
