Grant signed appointment as Secretary of War issued to a Medal of Honor recipient

Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as Secretary of War. One partly printed page, 8" x 10", Washington; October 31, 1867. A document issued to Isaac. S. Catlin, "that the President of the United States has appointed you for gallant and meritorious services at Petersburg, Va., a Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet..." During the Civil War, he served as Colonel in the 109th New York. Catlin also received the Medal of Honor for his heroic attempts to rally disorganized troops at Petersburg on July 30, 1864. He was wounded and had his right leg amputated. Dampstaining and soiling, but remains presentable. Grant served as acting Secretary of War for a brief five months from August 1867 until January 1868, when Congress reinstated Edwin Stanton. Documents signed as Secretary of War are the scarcest format for Grant, this particular document has a nice association to a Civil War hero.
