Description

Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as president. Two partly-printed pages including integral blank, pale blue paper, 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., March 3, 1870. Docketed on verso in pencil. Being an authorization for the "Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Domingo Emuy, dated this day, and signed by me, and for so doing this shall be his warrant. U.S. Grant, Washington, Mch. 3, 1870."

Little is known about Domingo Emuy other than that he was born in the 1820s and married a woman named Phillipi Palmas. It is possible this pardon is one of many approved in connection with a general amnesty to all Confederates, which was initiated on Christmas Day 1868 by Grant's predecessor, Andrew Johnson. Document is lightly age-toned with faint mounting traces at extreme edges from previous display. One-inch tear at upper left edge and one-inch area of fold separation at lower right affects both pages.
