    Ulysses S. Grant Consul Appointment Signed "U. S. Grant" as president. Also included are two Hamilton Fish documents signed and numerous William Brisbane family papers. The presidential appointment consists of one sheet, 20.5" x 16.5", Washington, February 23, 1872, appointing William Brisbane of Pennsylvania "Consul of the United States of America at Ghent." Countersigned by Secretary of State Hamilton Fish; blind-embossed paper seal in lower left corner. Toned with folds; minor soiling.

    Two Hamilton Fish Documents Signed. (1) 14.5" x 19", April 16, 1872, appointing William Brisbane "Consul of the United States at Ghent, Belgium." (2) 11.5" x 17", November 6, 1872, granting safe passage to "Mrs. William Brisbane, Wife of United States Consul at Ghent, Belgium, accompanied by her minor daughter." Both documents have folds; minor stains.

    This collection also includes numerous family papers, such as poems, biographical manuscripts, letters, photographs, typed family stories, recipes, and newspaper clippings. All have been well cared for.
