    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 3.75" x 6", [London], July 4, 1877. Two months after leaving office, the Grants set out on a two year world tour. Grant's hope was that if the American people could see how beloved he was around the world, he would be able to capture the Republican nomination for president in 1880 and, possibly, a third term in office.

The family arrived in Liverpool, England, in May 1877 and toured that country for several weeks. Addressed to Ayres Merrill, Grant's minister to Belgium during his presidency, regarding their impending visit, in part: "My party, consisting of Mrs. Grant, Jesse, Gen. Badeau, Consul Gen. to London - and formerly of my staff - leave here tomorrow by special train for Folkestone where we take special boat to Ostend [Belgium]. We will remain overnight in Ostend and proceed to Brussels the following day. . . . As soon as I can after my arrival I will do myself the pleasure of calling on you and your family to pay my respects, and hope I may find you much improved in health." The Grants returned home on September 20, 1879. He failed to capture the Republican Party's nomination for president, but supported the nominee, James A. Garfield, who had served under him as a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
