    Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of of bifolium, 4.75" x 7.75", writing on the first and third pages. "New York City", October, 8, 1883. Grant writes to Theodore Lyman, "Will you be kind enough to do me the favor to ask Dr. [Samuel A.] Green, Secretary of the Peabody Educational Fund Trustees, to send me a copy of the resolution passed relative to the death of Surgeon Gen. [Joseph] Barnes..." Green had served as a medical officer during the Civil War. Joseph Barnes had also served during the Civil War in a medical capacity and was given command of the bureau of the Medical Department of the army by Secretary of War Stanton. He eventually assumed the role of Surgeon General, a post he retained until his death on April 5, 1883. Very clean, save for ink stains on the facing page resulting at the time of Grant's writing the letter.
