    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One page, 5" x 8", on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, December 24, 1869. Addressed to the Reverend John Philip Newman, pastor of the Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church and chaplain of the U.S. Senate, Grant donates a sizable sum of money, in full: "Enclosed please find a check for $150 which I send to you for the benefit of the poor, and the schools for poor children in Washington and Georgetown. Please donate $100 for the former purpose and the remainder of the latter." Smoothed folds. Unevenly toned with areas of light staining.

John Philip Newman (1826-1899) entered the ministry in 1848. He and President Grant became friends during their time in Washington. In 1873, Newman served as inspector of U.S. Consulates in Asia for a period of one and a half years on the appointment of Grant. Following his return to the U.S., Newman resumed his position at the Metropolitan Church. After a visit to California, Newman returned and ministered to his friend, Grant, who was dying of throat cancer. Upon the latter's death in 1885, Rev. Newman delivered the funeral oration.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
