DescriptionUlysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One page, 7.5" x 9.75", Nashville, January 16, 1864. Addressed to Gen. George Henry Thomas, the "Rock of Chickamauga," head of the Department of the Cumberland, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant writes, in full: "Please send the bearer of this, Mrs. Bransford, under Flag of Truce, to the Confederate lines." Professionally mounted to a backing board. Saved from a fire, the letter shows areas of staining along the left and lower edges.
According to Confederate Veteran Magazine, Vol. XIII (May 1905, p. 216, Mrs. Bransford was "the mother of a prominent Confederate officer."
