    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed. Three bifolium pages, 5" x 8", New York City, November 25, 1882. Five years after leaving the White House (and three years before his death), Grant writes this letter to General Fitz John Porter regarding "the findings of the Court Martial of 1862 when charges against you." Grant continues, "You are at liberty to do with it as you think best. I will suggest however that it does not appear to me worthy of a place in a magazine of the standing of the North American Review. As you know it [an article on the court martial prepared by Grant] was dictated from notes prepared hastily, and they were departed from largely. The subject however has become so familiar to me recently that I think I have committed no error in the statement of facts. I am sorry that I did not have more time to prepare the article; but I have had my time so taken up with callers at my office since I committed to write this."

Following the Second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862, General Porter was relieved of his command and accused of insubordination. He was dismissed from the army in January 1863. After the war, Grant became convinced that Porter had been treated wrongly and put much effort into proving his innocence. This letter has smoothed folds; it has been repaired along the central fold. Grant's text and signature are very clear and bold.
