Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U. S. Grant." One page, 5" x 8", Washington, February 10, 1866. Writing to John A. King, former governor of New York, Grant acknowledges receipt of a letter informing him "of the action of the Committee of the 'Union Club' in regard to the arrangements for a dinner which they propose to honor me." He informs King that he will leave on the 20th "accompanied by five members of my staff, Cols. Porter, Babcock, Badeau, & Hudson and Capt. Dunn." Smoothed folds. Ink ghosting in places from folding. Text is very bright. Mounting remnants on the verso.

Each of the men listed by Grant served on his staff during the war. Horace Porter (1837-1921) served as Grant's personal secretary during the war and while he was president, later serving as ambassador to France. Orville E. Babcock (1835-1884) served as aide-de-camp for Grant and, later, as President Grant's chief of staff. Adam Babeau (1831-1895) served as Grant's military secretary during the last year of the war. Peter T. Hudson (1825-?) served on Grant's staff and helped shuttle information between Grant and Gen. William T. Sherman. William McKee Dunn Jr. (1843-1891) served on the staff of Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan before joining Grant's staff.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
