    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U. S. Grant / Brig Gen." One page, 7.5" x 7", "Head Quarters, Dist. S. E. Mo., Cairo," September 17, 1861, to Colonel L. T. Ross, "Comdg. Fort Jefferson." Grant's text reads in full, "Your orders meet with my entire approval. I hope you will see them enforced." This letter exhibits minor staining. Separations are just beginning at the smoothed folds. Mounting tape remnants exist on the verso.

After graduating from West Point in 1843 and serving in the Mexican War, Ulysses S. Grant resigned from the army in 1854. The beginning of the Civil War found him struggling to make ends meet in his father's tannery in Galena, Illinois. He soon began recruiting and training Illinois volunteers and was quickly promoted to colonel in command of the 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. President Lincoln appointed Grant brigadier general in July 1861, and he was assigned to the District of Cairo in southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri. Lincoln's regard for Grant as a general grew throughout the war; he appointed the former tanner Commanding General of the Army in 1864.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
