Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U. S. Grant." One and one-quarter pages, 5.25" x 8", New York City, November 27, 1880, on Grant's personal paper bearing a crest with his initials in the upper left. Written three years after he left the White House, Grant is writing a friendly note to a Mrs. Gray about a dinner invitation. He writes in full:

"Mrs. Grant desires to [illegible] answer your kind note asking us to suggest a day next week or the week after when we will be disengaged, and can accept an invitation to dine with you. It would be hard for [illegible] to suggest a day prior to the 20th of Dec. Up to that time I have a number of engagements when only gentlemen are invited; as many as it will be convenient to fill.

"Mrs. Grant regrets she was not in when you called."

In 1880, Grant made a failed run at a third presidential term. Lightly toned around the edges with minor chips; very fine.
