Grant on Sherman: "If he should ever change his mind however no one has a better right to aspire to any thing within the gift of the American people"
Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed as President. Three pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8". Long Branch, N.J.; June 14, 1871. A letter to Senator John Sherman regarding General William T. Sherman's decision not to run for the presidency. Grant is writing acknowledging receipt of his letter, enclosing a letter William Sherman. In part: "Under no circumstances would I publish it and now that the New York Herald has published like statements from him, it is particularly unnecessary - I think his determination never to give up his present position is a wise one, for his own comfort, and the public knowing it will relieve him from the suspicion of acting and speaking with reference to the effect of his acts and sayings may have upon his chances for political preferment. If he should ever change his mind however no one has a better right to aspire to any thing within the gift of the American people."Immediately after the close of the War, Sherman's name was sometimes bandied about as a possible presidential candidate. At the time of this letter, 1871, his name again was considered as a possible candidate for the 1872 race. But Sherman had been appointed Commanding General of the United States Army by Grant at the start of his presidency, and had no interest in politics. He instead, focused on expanding settlements into the Western United States. During his tenure as Commanding General, the Indian Wars raged on, including the Modoc War, the Great Sioux War, and the Nez Perce War. A great content letter demonstrative of the enduring alliance between two Union Generals.
Condition: With flattened folds and gently toned. Two small tears at top margins resulting in wrinkling and paper loss to the integral page. Mounting remnants along the integral fold and bottom on verso.
