Stewart Van Vliet (1815-1901) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1840 and served through the Seminole War in the 3rd U.S. Artillery. Van Vliet served throughout the Civil War, first as chief quartermaster for the Army of the Potomac until 1862. He spent the remainder of the war in New York City as a logistics officer for the troops in the field. He retired from service in 1881 as assistant quartermaster for the U.S. Army.
