Ulysses S. Grant and James Garfield Autograph Album Signed, ca. 1870. Grant has the first signature in the book ("U. S. Grant"), most likely while serving as president. James Garfield's signature ("J. A. Garfield / Hiram, Ohio") as an Ohio congressman appears later in the book. The autograph album also includes the signatures of Grant's vice president, Schuyler Colfax, and his 1870 cabinet: William W. Belknap, George S. Boutwell, Hamilton Fish, Jacob D. Cox, George M. Robeson, Amos T. Akerman, and John A. J. Creswell. Numerous senators and congressmen have also signed the album, including Benjamin F. Butler, Lyman Trumbull, and James G. Blaine. William H. Seward's signature, excised from an unknown document, has been affixed to a page in the album.

The autograph album appears to have been given by James M. Cavanaugh, a congressman from Minnesota, "To J. C. Rainsford / Washington D.C. / 1870," as an inscription on the first page reads. Cavanaugh served as congressman from 1867 until 1871, a period when he likely acquired these autographs. The album was originally printed by J. B. Lippincott & Co. of Philadelphia. Full maroon leather with decorative border stamped in blind and title in gilt; extremities rubbed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
