Taylor Mexican War-dated signed letter of recommendation
Zachary Taylor Letter Signed. One page with integral blank, 7.75" x 9.8". Monterrey, Mexico; January 26, 1847. A letter of recommendation addressed to President James Polk: "Lieut. J. R. Butler, Aide de Camp to Major General [William Orlando] Butler informs me that he is an applicant for a commission in the Regular Army. Mr. Butler came to Mexico in the first call for volunteers as a member of the 2d Regiment of Kentucky Volunteers and was soon thereafter appointed by his uncle as one of his Aides de Camp, in which capacity he is now serving. This young gentleman has received a liberal education, is of amicable disposition, and indeed every way calculated to make a good officer, and his experiences in the war will make him, if appointed, a valuable acquisition to the service..." Signed, "Z. Taylor, Majr Genl / U.S. Army."Taylor is writing approximately four months after the Battle of Monterrey, where General Butler served as his second-in-command. Ironically, Butler ran as vice president on the Democratic ticket against Taylor and Fillmore. Good war-date content with a nice association between a sitting and future president. Accompanied by an engraving of Taylor dressed in uniform.
Condition: Gently toned, with a couple of small stray ink stains and flattened folds. A strip of adhesive staining is visible at the top of the fourth line of text at left. Light soiling and slightly darker toning on verso of blank integral.
