Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor" as colonel of the First Regiment of U. S. Infantry. Two pages with integral page, 8" x 10", "Fort Crawford [Wisconsin]," July 15, 1834. Written on the verso of an application for a leave of absence for Taylor, he is writing to Col. R. Jones regarding the situation at the fort if his leave is accepted: "Herewith you will receive for the consideration of the General-in-chief an application for a leave of absence for sixty days...should it be granted it will perhaps become necessary to transfer...the Head Quarters of the Fort Armstrong instead of ordering Lieut. Col. Davenport to this place..." Chipping near the top and bottom of the left edge. Slight ink bleed-through from the verso. Separation at the right edge of the upper horizontal fold. Taylor's signature is bold and bright.

Taylor was nearly 30 years into military service in 1834. He had seen action during the War of 1812, had served up and down the frontier, and, most recent to the writing of this letter, took part in Black Hawk's War. "Old Rough and Ready" would go on to serve in the Second Seminole War in 1835 and become a hero of the Mexican War. His leadership during the American victories at the Battles of Palo Alto and Monterrey helped propel him to victory over Lewis Cass during the presidential election of 1848. He would not hold that office long, however, as he died just over one year into his term, only the second president to do so.
